Lancaster Department of Transportation
The "Street Department" Does More Than Just Your "Streets" . . .
- 400 lane miles of streets and 41 miles of alleys fall under our Street Maintenance Operations. Maintenance activities include identifying streets for the annual Street Improvement Program that is funded by the 3 Mil Levy, pothole repairs, crack sealing and other surface preservation processes. We also have the capability of performing paving operations with city crews.
- 1,349 manholes, 3,832 inlets, 155 culverts and almost 100 miles of storm pipe, ranging from 4 inches to 96 inches in diameter, are cleaned and maintained by the crews performing Stormwater Maintenance.
- Our Cemetery Division maintains just short of 100 acres, spread out across six cemeteries. Three of those are currently active and three are inactive. Their duties include opening and closing graves for burials, headstone and foundation maintenance, assisting funeral homes with burials along with assisting mowing contractors with ground maintenance.
- We maintain the City's Central Fuel Depot which dispenses approximately 400,000 gallons of Diesel and Unleaded fuel annually. It serves 15 separate departments, 24 hours a day/356 days a year.
- The Traffic Control Division overseas and maintains 77 signalized intersections, 6 mid-block crossing flashers and 6 bike trail crossing flashers, as well as several school zone flashers. They maintain over 6 miles of fiber-optic cable that keeps the controllers connected to a central, computerized traffic management system. The Sign Technicians maintain over 5,600 traffic and street name signs. The Traffic Control Division also installs and maintains over 4,000 roadway pavement markings.
- Our electrician, who is part of our Traffic Control Division, is the lead technician when it comes to maintaining the 263 City-owned streetlights and eight electrical control centers. We also facilitate streetlight repair coordination with American Electric Power and South Central Power when any of the other 2,000 streetlights are out.
- During the winter months, our primary mission is Snow and Ice Control. Our crews will run 12 hour shifts, clearing almost 400 lane miles of streets and roadways. Keeping major routes open and passable is our main priority.
- Other activities we perform throughout the year are mowing and maintaining the right-of-ways and guardrail maintenance. We fog for mosquitos during the summer months and our crews perform the road closures for annual events such as the Holiday and 4th of July Parades, Art Walk and other downtown events. We hang the Christmas decorations and Hometown Hero Banners as well.
