When Do I Need a Building Permit?

A building permit represents the City of Lancaster’s authorization to begin construction. Most work involving new construction or remodeling requires a building permit. Work classified as maintenance does not. If you are erecting, constructing, enlarging, adding to, altering, repairing, replacing, moving or maintaining a building, structure, or building service equipment, you must obtain a permit before work begins. Learn about when permits are not required (PDF) with this printable document.

All forms and applications can be obtained in person, can be faxed to you by request or you can download all forms online.
